The short answer is: Shade range and payoff. Most clean cosmetics brands offer products with limited shade ranges for a more natural look — which is beautiful, but not for everyone. Smooth texture, blend-ability and good coverage are hard to come by. That’s why Clove + Hallow focuses on wear. Our foundations seamlessly blend with skin— offering buildable yet comfortable coverage that lasts until you take it off. Our lipsticks are creamy and stay put without crumbling or drying out lips. And we work hard at selecting pigments that suit a broad range of skin tones and styles, so there’s something for most. If there’s something we’re missing that you’d love to see, let us know at email@example.com
What is the difference between green, non-toxic, organic and natural?
These terms are used very interchangeably. “Green”, “clean,” and “non-toxic” generally refer to the bigger picture—these are products that strive to be safer and healthier alternatives without speaking to the specific ingredients. “Natural” means that the ingredients were derived from nature (ie their original source is plant, mineral or even animal based rather than chemically derived in a lab), and “organic” refers to the environment in which ingredients are grown and harvested. Clove + Hallow uses many natural and organic ingredients in all of our clean cosmetics and formulations, and thus we are also green and non-toxic.
Because going green and being natural is a marketing trend that many brands try to leverage without actually committing to the underlying principles—it’s called “greenwashing” — we encourage you to do your homework into what these terms and definitions mean and to read cosmetic ingredient lists like you would a food label. A good rule of thumb: If you feel like you’re taking a chemistry class, it’s probably not a safe choice.
Your products are cruelty free, but what about animal byproducts?
Our clean cosmetics are not only cruelty-free, but vegan. We don’t use any animal byproducts – ethically sourced or otherwise. No honey, no beeswax, nada.
Why don't you use synthetic fragrance or flavors?
Clove + Hallow only uses natural fragrances and flavors because the terms “fragrance” and “flavor” aren’t well regulated and are often used to slip nasty ingredients into your products, such as phthalates. Whatever fragrance or flavoring we use — usually an essential oil or extract — will be clearly labeled on our clean cosmetics ingredient list so you know exactly what you’re getting.
Aren’t some essential oils irritating to skin or unsafe for pregnant women?
Essential oils in their undiluted form can be irritating if applied directly to the skin. Our clean cosmetics utilize essential oils in a very low concentration as an alternative to toxic synthetic fragrance. In this capacity, they are generally safe for even sensitive skin.
Our products are natural and very safe, however, if you are pregnant or have any other specific healthcare concerns, please contact a medical professional.
Some of your products use synthetic dyes. Why?
Simply put: Achieving bold, bright or unusual shades — a key differentiator for Clove + Hallow— requires some degree of synthetic dye. We start with what we can achieve using natural iron oxides and minerals, and supplement as needed with very small amounts of the safer synthetic dyes. In such tiny concentrations, we believe they are worth the trade-off for awesome shades.
Do Clove + Hallow products use a chemical preservative?
We believe that it is ethically unsound to make clean cosmetics or products for your face and body that are likely to mold, deteriorate, or grow bacteria, so we use a preservative system called Geogard Ultra (sodium benzoate + gluconolactone) in addition to a blend of herbs and extracts that contribute to shelf-life. Geogard Ultra is considered an effective preservative by the FDA and is the only approved natural chemical preservative system by EcoCert. You have the best of both worlds this way!
What are your shipping and return policies?
We offer free ground shipping for orders over $75, as well as $5 flat-rate shipping to anywhere in the USA. If you aren’t happy with a product for any reason, we offer an exchange program or a full refund. Your happiness and satisfaction is our top priority!
How do I choose a foundation that matches my skin tone?
Shade matching online is tricky. To ease that burden, check out our Shade Finder<link>. In addition, we offer a sampling program for $15 that provides you with samples of four shades near your skin tone to try out. If you still have concerns or are confused, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and a matching specialist will get back to you.
Are Clove + Hallow products waterproof? Do they contain SPF?
Our products are water resistant due to their emollient levels, however, they are not waterproof unless specifically noted. We formulate our clean cosmetics with the highest quality ingredients possible, so they will last on your skin.
As for SPF: While most of our formulas use minerals that offer sun protection benefits, we cannot guarantee any level of SPF unless specifically noted on the package, so be sure to wear sunscreen daily!
What does Clove + Hallow mean?
Clove is meant to evoke the warmth we hope you feel from our welcoming brand, and Hallow encompasses the ritualistic and revered relationship that women have with their beauty routines. Our founder chose the name Clove + Hallow with intention, because these words truly represent who we are as a clean cosmetics brand.
What are the biggest challenges clean cosmetics lines face?
The two biggest clean cosmetics challenges are greenwashing and achieving excellent product performance. Greenwashing occurs when cbrands claim that they’re green, clean, natural or organic, when in fact they may feature a handful of natural ingredients sandwiched between a load of toxic chemicals. Because these terms are largely unregulated in the beauty industry, many brands are actually NOT clean at all. As for achieving product performance: nature has given us mostly everything we need to make great beauty products, but it still takes a lot of time, effort, and money to turn these ingredients into something far better than a DIY recipe you can whip up in your kitchen.
How did you come up with Clean15?
It is challenging to read a cosmetic label. Between the complexity of ingredients, and the sheer number of them, it is too easy to be misled, misdirected or misinformed. Our goal with Clean15 is to simplify our cosmetics label so that consumers can make informed purchases.
Are Clove + Hallow products safe for pregnancy?
We only use ingredients that are derived from nature or have been studied extensively and deemed safe. That being said, we recommend having a discussion with your doctor to double check any health risks associated with ingredients.
What’s the best way to remove Clove + Hallow products?
Any makeup remover is suitable to remove our products, but we recommend our Makeup Melt (coming in INSERT DATE)—a balm-to-oil makeup removing cleanser that won’t dry out your skin and has been specifically formulated to our Clean15 standards.
